As part of our vision to be perceived, by the people of Rotherham, as providing an 'outstanding' service, we have invested in, and continue to put in place new ways of working. What does this mean for our workforce?

We are radically restructuring to enable us to deploy much smaller teams. This means a greater degree of supervision and a more appropriate caseload level – enabling our practitioners to focus on fewer customers, ensuring those who need us most get the attention they need.

Our locality teams are placed within the communities they serve, so they really get to know the neighbourhood; building close relationships with partners, children and families in the local area. This deepens trust and familiarity, helping us to put vulnerable children and young people at the centre of what we do. By being on the ground and visible in schools, homes and centres, we forge vital links with the community, opening up communication and creating an approachable presence in Rotherham.

We have put in place accessible leadership and are nurturing a culture which encourages people to speak out and voice their observations and recommendations. Our Practitioner Board gives our social workers a formal platform to provide feedback on the service we are providing so we can continue to listen, learn and improve every aspect of our working structure, processes and environment.

We have purchased and plan to implement new systems and tools which will result in major IT improvements. This should mean far less admin and paper work. With greater efficiency and time saving, our staff are freed up to focus on their case load and on making a difference to the families they work with.

We have invested in training programmes and set out a clear career development pathway. From continuing your professional development with ongoing, practical training, to reaching senior management levels. At Rotherham there is a definite ladder to be climbed for those with talent and ambition.
